Intended Audience

This course is designed for—

  • Project Managers who must manage large complex projects with limited resources

  • Program Managers who must allocate limited resources across projects

Course Description

This course provides the basics of critical chain scheduling and resources-constrained project management. These fundamental tools and techniques are invaluable in managing the complexity of large projects and allocating scarce resources across multiple projects. The course reveals the critical areas of the ongoing projects including the hidden cost of work-in-process. Techniques to reduce and eliminate lost time on projects as well as how to allocate scarce resources will be explored though examples and case studies.

Learning Outcomes

Through mini lectures and hands-on teamwork, the course seeks to develop advanced project management skills in the Project and Program Manager. The application of the Theory of Constraints to the management of a project is reviewed in detail, with practical instruction on how to—

  • Eliminate multi-tasking, the black hole of project progress

  • Identify pad time and give it back to the project

  • Use project buffers to combat Parkinson’s Law

  • Create the right measurements on projects

  • Use feeder buffers to assure no delays

  • Use drum buffers to allocate scarce resources

  • Educate project sponsors to ask the right questions
