Intended Audience

This course is designed for experienced project and program managers as a review of current practices in project management and the project management process, especially as defined by the Project Management Institute (PMI). It also provides an excellent introduction to PMI’s Project Management Professional® (PMP) certification.

Course Description

The course provides a thorough review of the project management framework, with particular attention paid to the project life cycle and the triple constraints of Time, Cost, and Quality. Techniques for developing and managing the scope and Work Breakdown Structures are re-enforced through hands-on exercises. The concepts surrounding Risk, Team Building, Communication, and Contract Management are presented with the goal of bringing the elements of PMI’s Body of Knowledge and their relationship to PMP certification into clear focus.

Learning Outcomes

Through mini lectures and hands-on teamwork, the course seeks to create a typical project life cycle for reviewing tools and techniques and introducing new skills. Specific instruction will focus on how to—

  • Identify PMI’s components of the project management process

  • Apply the PERT estimating formula

  • Review and apply the Work Breakdown Structures (WBS)

  • Develop scope statements and manage changes to the project scope

  • Apply Cost management techniques and assess project Risk

  • Create a project communication plan and identify key stakeholders and customer requirements

  • Apply Quality planning within the project life cycle

  • Manage Time (schedule) through the development of the project network diagram and the milestone Gantt chart
