Intended Audience

This course provides valuable insight for line and functional managers into the unique demands that project members face as they balance project activities with their day-to-day operational responsibilities. With its broad overview of the project management process, the course is also ideal for managers who manage project managers, especially if their experience is in operational or technical areas and not in project management. Finance managers and analysts with responsibility for funding projects will also find this course beneficial.

Course Description

This course provides a basic understanding of the framework on which project management is based, the project management process, and the triple constraints of Time, Cost, and Quality. Techniques for the development of the Scope and the Work Breakdown Structures are introduced through a hands-on exercise. The concepts surrounding Risk, Team Building, Communication, and Contract Management are introduced in this fast-paced session geared to line, operational, and finance managers.

Learning Outcomes

By better understanding the nature of projects and their requirements, managers will gain a basic understanding of the project management process and be better prepared to manage resources that are required for successful projects. Managers will learn how to interact with project managers and team members for the benefit of both the project and organization. Specific instruction will focus on how to—

  • Identify the eight components of the Project Management process as defined by the Project Management Institute

  • Review and apply the Work Breakdown Structures (WBS)

  • Work within the project life cycle

  • Identify the roles and responsibilities of the project manager, project sponsor, and other project members
