Intended Audience

This course is designed for—

  • Experienced Project and Program Managers who want to review current practices in developing Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) and learn new techniques

  • Project Managers and Project/Team Leaders who have recently entered the profession or recently assumed growing project responsibilities

  • Project team members who are assigned to participate on a project, whether full-time or part-time, and may include developers, service delivery staff, finance and procurement analysts, Quality and test analysts, and trainers

Course Description

The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is said to be the “heart and soul” of the project. So why do so many of us have difficulty leading our teams in the development of the WBS?

This course offers some theory and a lot of hands-on practice in the development of the WBS. The session will share its focus with the development of the Scope Statement and review how combining the Scope Statement and the WBS assists in identifying and assessing the impact of changes on projects.

Learning Outcomes

Through mini lectures and hands-on teamwork, the course seeks to create a typical project life cycle, with practical instruction on how to—

  • Identify the activities associated with scheduling and conducting a WBS session

  • Develop the Scope Statement and WBS

  • Create a “lessons learned” review from a WBS perspective
